What is a Loop Giveaway?
The first time I was invited to participate in an Instagram loop giveaway, I had no idea what it was or how it worked. I googled it, didn’t find much, and eventually (blushing with embarrassment) I emailed the blogger who invited me and asked how it works.
In case you aren’t sure how they work either, here’s the rundown:
- A group of bloggers pool their money (usually via Paypal to one person) and offer a prize.
- One image is created that everyone will post on their Instagram at the same exact time. Directions for people to enter are included as the caption.
- Directions include what a person has to do to get an entry. In a loop giveaway, they have to follow every person in the loop, and sometimes “like” all of the photos as well.
- Every participant in the giveaway has someone who tags them and then is given someone to tag in the photo. This means that people who want to enter to win can start on any Instagram account of any of the participants, click the tagged person in the photo, follow that next person, click the photo again and jump to the next tagged person, follow them, etc. etc.
- When you get back to the person you started on, you’ve completed the loop and are entered to win.
Entering a Loop Giveaway
Entering Instagram loop giveaways can be fun because you can follow a lot of new people all at once. Unfortunately, I’ve seen loop giveaways with upwards of 30 participants. It takes quite a bit of time to enter if you’re going through a loop of 30 people or more! Loops with more people often do mean that there is a larger prize though.
Another issue I’ve found is that you might follow a lot of people whose Instagram you would never follow without incentive. This could be a good thing! I’ve found some of my favorite Instgrammers and shops on loop giveaways. But it also could mean that you follow someone you would never follow on you own.
Participating in a Loop Giveaway
As a participant in an Instagram loop giveaway, you could gain hundreds (or thousands) of new followers in hours. In the most recent loop giveaway I participated in, I watched as my Instagram followers went up by 500. It was awesome!
But…and you knew there had to be a but, right? But…
Prepare to Gain a Ton of Followers…and then Lose a Lot of them
After the giveaway winner was announced, I lost over 1/5 of them. Yup, over 100 people unfollowed me. Actually, even now, each time I post my followers go down. My Instagram aesthetic might not be their thing (and that’s okay!) but it still feels sucky.
The truth is, these aren’t the followers you want anyway. They aren’t the ones who are going to interact with your posts. Heck, they might just be someone who has an account specifically to enter giveaways.
If One Person Doesn’t Post At the Right Time…
I have participated in two loop giveaways. In one, a participant did not post the giveaway at the agreed upon time (she wound up being about an hour late) and therefore the loop was broken. That means that anyone who was in the loop after her (depending on where the entrant started) did not get people to their Instagram account and did not gain followers. Did it work fine once she posted? Yes. But it kind of sucked and may have decreased the effectiveness of the loop for all of us.
When you participate in a loop giveaway, you have a responsibility to hold up your end of the deal and you are dependent on others to do the same.
Loops Have Rules
Instagram has its own set of promotion guidelines. Any loop that you run or are asked to participate in should abide by those guidelines. I have no idea what would happen if you got caught breaking them (legal action? you’d get kicked off of Instagram?) but it’s not worth the risk.
How to Gain the Most Followers
Let’s look at this logically. If you are participating in a group giveaway with say 20 bloggers, a great majority of their followers may see the post and some may enter. The Instagram loop giveaways that have the most entrants are the ones that have participants with the highest number of existing followers.
So what does this mean for you? If you’re invited to an Instagram loop giveaway, it is most beneficial for you if you have the lowest number of followers amongst the group. It means the cool kids want you to play with them! You will benefit from everyone else having a higher number of followers because their followers are being given the chance to find you.
Conversely, if you have the highest number of existing followers amongst the group, the other participants may benefit more from your higher follower count. This might be kind of obvious but it’s something to consider if you are asked to be a part of an Instagram loop.
Should you participate in an Instagram Loop Giveaway?
If you are asked to be a part of an Instagram loop giveaway, here are some things to consider.
- Take a look at the other participants and see how many followers they have, what their Instagram aesthetics are and if they are similar to yours.
- Would your followers like them?
- Would their followers like you?
- Is the prize something you feel good about offering?
Thinking of starting your own Instagram Loop Giveaway?
If you’d like to put together an Instagram loop, I would take a look at the questions above and seek out those individuals. Email your blogger friends and see if anyone would like to participate. Don’t be offended if they don’t.
Be Cautious of Your Frequency
It can be tempting after your first Instagram loop giveaway to jump right in to another one. You gained so many followers! Seeing that number go up can be addicting. Before joining your next Instagram loop giveaway, consider when your last one was. How many photos have you posted on Instagram since then? Have you engaged with your new followers? Too many loop giveaways can turn people off and can lead to a decrease in followers.
Now tell me, what do you think of Instagram loop giveaways? Have you participated in one? As a user, do you dislike them?
